California’s Washington Post interactive report explains that tiny plastic particles known as microplastics—originally found in the oceans and food—are now pervasive in the air we breathe and throughout the human body, with people inhaling or ingesting tens of thousands of these particles annually. They originate from everyday sources such as synthetic clothing fibers, vehicle tires and plastic packaging, and research shows they can penetrate deep into the lungs, enter the bloodstream and spread to many major organs. Scientists are alarmed because these particles carry potentially toxic chemical additives and may contribute to inflammation and chronic diseases, though the full health impacts are still being studied and not yet fully understood.
