California’s attorney general filed a landmark lawsuit against ExxonMobil accusing the oil giant of engaging in a “decades-long campaign of deception” by misleading the public about the effectiveness of plastics recycling and promoting it as a solution to the global plastic pollution crisis, even though most plastics are not actually recyclable. The complaint, filed in San Francisco County Superior Court, alleges ExxonMobil falsely touted broad recyclability—including through the familiar “chasing arrows” symbol and claims about “advanced recycling”—to encourage continued production and consumption of single-use plastics, contributing to environmental harm. California is seeking billions of dollars in damages and penalties, as well as injunctive relief and funds for education and improved recycling research, while ExxonMobil disputes the state’s claims and blames systemic issues in recycling infrastructure.
